Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

As the Texas Legislature comes to a close next Friday, we want to update you on bills that we believe have potential to pass this session.

Bill Opposing Common Core

HSLDA supports House Bill 462, which passed out of the Senate Committee on Education last Friday with a favorable report. We anticipate that it will be considered by the full Senate before the end of this session and be sent to the governor’s desk.

If HB 462 passes, Texas would become the first state to not only reject the common core, but also to prohibit the State Board of Education and independent school districts from implementing the Common Core State Standards in Texas public schools. For more information on the common core, read HSLDA’s latest article.

Truancy Law Modification

HB 2872 shortens the number of days a student may be absent if attending a public school not operating on a yearly basis. Because some homeschoolers are targeted by truancy laws, especially when withdrawing from public school, HSLDA opposes HB 2872. HB 2872 is currently in consideration in the Senate Education Committee.

As always, please visit HSLDA’s legislation tracking website to keep up with what is going on in Austin.

Standing with you for freedom,

Darren A. Jones
HSLDA Staff Attorney

Who are the Nation’s Best Lobbyists?

We don’t know that this has ever been determined; but we do know that HSLDA’s Federal Relations Department is the only national organization lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers on Capitol Hill.
