Amendment to HF 630 is a Threat to Homeschoolers and Parental Freedom

Dear Minnesota Members and Friends,

An amendment to increase the compulsory school attendance age to 17
years old is under consideration by the Minnesota Legislature's
conference committee on the Omnibus Education Bill.

Increasing the age of compulsory attendance restricts the right of
parents to decide what is best for their children who are 16 years old
who prefer to work or pursue some other alternative form of education.
If the amendment is adopted by the conference committee, it would
violate parental rights and allow schools to make truancy charges or
reports to child protective services against parents and students who
choose these legitimate education alternatives.

Representative Dean Urdahl has indicated that he may be open to
opposing the compulsory attendance increase. Please contact
Representative Urdahl and give him the following messages in your own

"I am calling to oppose Senator Wiger's amendment in the Omnibus
Education Bill, House File 630 to raise the compulsory attendance age
to 17. This provision is dangerous because it unnecessarily increases
state control over parental decision making. The amendment would lead
to increased taxes and dangerous schools by forcing children who have
discipline problems to remain in school against their wishes and the
judgment of their parents. Studies have shown that raising the
compulsory school attendance age does not help students. Please vote
against the amendment in House File 630 to raise the compulsory
attendance age."
