Hawaii Legislature Now Adjourned!

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

The Hawaii Legislature adjourned for 2013 yesterday, May 2. During
this session, HSLDA was on the alert for bills that may have affected
homeschooling, your parental rights, and your educational freedoms.

During this first half of the 2013-2014 legislative session, several
bills were introduced, including House Bill "HB" 1030 which would have
increased the compulsory school attendance age from 16 to 17, and HB
1466, which would have lowered the compulsory school attendance age to
5. Thankfully, neither of these bills was brought to a discussion in
the House Education Committee.

Thanks to your quick and passionate response, homeschoolers
overwhelmingly defeated Senate Bill 922 in the Education Committee,
which would have required homeschool children to enroll in the public
school. HSLDA turns 30 this year, and with such a long record of
defending homeschooling freedoms, we do not see many "firsts" anymore.
SB 922 would have been a big "first," becoming the first law in the
history of our country to require homeschoolers to formally enroll in
public schools - with myriad, untold consequences for homeschool

Thankfully, because of your vigilance and vocal opposition to this
destructive bill, the Senate Education Committee pulled the bill from
consideration almost immediately, and has decided not to pursue it
further. No similar bill was introduced this session.

HSLDA is especially grateful to the Christian Homeschoolers of Hawaii
(CHOH) for its swift and timely response to SB 922 and for so
effectively organizing opposition to the bill in just a matter of
hours. Without the dedication of CHOH and the local homeschooling
network, SB 922 might have become the law in Hawaii.

It has been a privilege to serve as your attorney, protecting
homeschooling freedoms in Hawaii during the 2013 legislative season!
