Maine--Attack on Private School Independence Defeated!

Dear Maine HSLDA Members and Friends:

Thank you for your phone calls! Yesterday a Maine legislative
committee voted unanimously against LD 772, the bill that would have
compelled private schools--including the small private schools that
serve homeschool families--to report how many "Franco-American"
students the schools enroll.

Homeschool families in Maine have the option of complying with Maine's
home instruction statute or of banding together with like-minded
families and establishing a small private school that does not seek
accreditation or government approval, but is recognized for attendance
purposes by the Maine Commissioner of Education. They are sometimes
known by the acronym "RAPPS"--"recognized for attendance purposes
private school."

It's a priority for HSLDA and Homeschoolers of Maine (HOME) to protect
the freedom of homeschool parents regardless of which option they
choose. Yesterday's committee vote safeguards freedom by virtually
guaranteeing that the intrusive LD 772 will not become law.

Ed Greene of HOME testified against the bill during the public
hearing. His testimony was pivotal in helping the lawmakers see the
bill's problems.

Thank you for standing with us for freedom!

Sincerely,

Scott Woodruff
HSLDA Senior Counsel

-> How long are you in for?

Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to
homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some
graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to
be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA.
It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of
homeschooling ahead.
