Mississippi: Support Parental Rights Resolution

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Below is a message from that we are forwarding to
you. It asks Mississippi families to contact legislators and urge them
to vote for House Concurrent Resolution 96, which calls on the U.S.
Congress to pass the Parental Rights Amendment. We join with in asking you to contact members of the Mississippi
Senate and House Rules Committees in support of this important

Very truly yours,

Dewitt T. Black, III
HSLDA Senior Counsel

March 27, 2013 Call to Push Parental Rights Resolution

Last week Mississippi Rep. Bob Evans (D-91st) introduced House
Concurrent Resolution 96
(HC 96), which would call on the U.S. Congress to pass the Parental
Rights Amendment to the States for ratification. HC 96 exactly matches
SC 530, introduced several
weeks ago by Sen. Joey Fillingane (R-41).

This presents a terrific opportunity to show a truly bipartisan effort
on behalf of parents in your state. Unfortunately, this window of
opportunity is very small--the Mississippi Legislature adjourns at the
end of next week.

So we need your help today to urge the appropriate committees to move
these resolutions quickly to the floor for a vote.

Action Items

In the Senate, we would ask you to contact your senator if he is on
the Senate Rules Committee and ask him to vote to pass SC 530. Tell
him that parental rights are vitally important to you, and that you
believe Mississippi should join other states in calling for protection
of these rights in the U.S. Constitution.

Members of the Senate Rules Committee are as follows:

Sen. Gray Tollison (R-9: Lafayette, Tallahatchie, Yalobusha counties)

Sen. Billy Hudson (R-45: Forrest, Lamar, Pearl River, Perry, Stone
counties) 601-359-2395

Sen. Terry Burton (R-31: Lauderdale, Newton, Scott counties)

Sen. Terry Brown (R-17: Lowndes County) 601-359-3209

Sen. John Horhn (D-26: Hinds, Madison counties) 601-359-3237

In the House, call your representative if he or she is on the House
Rules Committee, and urge them to push HC96 to the floor for a vote.
Give them the same message as above (in your own words): That parental
rights are vitally important to you, and that Mississippi should join
other states in calling for protection of these rights in the U.S.

Members of the House Rules Committee are as follows:

Mark Formby, Chairman: / (601)359-3359

Charles Jim Beckett: / (601)359-3335

Edward Blackmon, Jr.: / (601)359-3371

Gary Chism: / (601)359-3364

George Flaggs, Jr.: / (601)359-3367

Andy Gipson: / (601)359-1541

Philip Gunn: (601)359-3300

Gregory Holloway: / (601)359-2435

Mac Huddleston: / (601)359-3340

John L. Moore: / (601)359-3330

John Read: / (601)359-3366

Greg Snowden: / (601)359-3304

Joseph L. Warren: / (601)359-3014

Additional Information

Currently neither the House nor Senate committee has a meeting
scheduled in the next two weeks. If they tell you this, urge them to
convene briefly to take up this very important matter. You might
mention that, since polling shows that over 90% of all Americans
regardless of political affiliation agree with traditional parental
rights, there shouldn't be much to discuss anyway. This is a vital
matter that should not be left on the table just because meeting would
be inconvenient.

The House recently passed a resolution (HC90) calling parental rights
a fundamental right. This (HC96) is a different resolution, calling on
the U.S. Congress to pass the PRA.

Since both resolutions (HC96 and SC530) match, you might mention to
your lawmakers that you are calling for support of both measures. It
may inspire the House to act, knowing that the Senate is also taking
up the measure--and vice versa.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to promote parental rights in
your State.
