====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== HSLDA Submits Testimony on Bill to Protect Homeschool Freedom Dear Michigan Members and Friends, The House Education Committee met yesterday to consider House Bill 4276 which would prohibit the state of Michigan from adopting the Common Core Standards. This bill would reject the "national curriculum" of Common Core in favor of state-developed standards. HSLDA supports this bill. I have submitted written testimony to the committee explaining the dangers of the Common Core Standards and their negative effect on both homeschoolers and all Michigan students. You can read a copy of this testimony here: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17720 The Common Core Standards are the latest attempt to adopt the one-size-fits-all approach of national curriculum standards. States have already spent years adopting their own state standards and now are being enticed with the promise of federal money to adopt these untested, universal standards. Beyond being bad for our public schools, adopting national standards can lead to national curriculum and national tests that would affect homeschoolers and their right to develop their own curriculum to best meet their children's needs. HB 4276 would prohibit these standards from being adopted in Michigan. For more information about the Common Core Standards, visit HSLDA's Issue Page here: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17721 ACTION REQUESTED Although no action is needed, we encourage you to contact your representative and give him or her the following messages in your own words: "I am calling to support HB 4276, which would prohibit the adoption of the Common Core Standards. Michigan has spent years preparing its own state curriculum and adopting these untested, one-size-fits-all standards would destroy the progress we have made and threaten parental rights to direct the education of their children. Please vote in favor of HB 4276 to prevent the adoption of these harmful standards."
