South Carolina--Attend the SCHEA Home School Day at the Capitol!

The South Carolina Home Educators Association invites all
homeschooling families to the Home School Day at the Capitol taking
place Thursday, April 11, 2013, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the
Capitol in Columbia. You will have a chance to meet with your state
senators and representatives as well as the opportunity to sit in on a
legislative session. A special workshop entitled "How South Carolina
Government Works and How You Can Participate In It" will be held at
10:00 a.m. and again at 11:00 a.m. Tours of the Capitol Building and
Governor's Mansion can also be arranged; three homeschool bands will
be performing on the grounds of the Capitol, and there will even be a
scavenger hunt! Registration for the day's events begins promptly at
9:00 a.m. in the hallway outside Room 101 of the Blatt Building.

We at HSLDA believe it is very important for as many homeschool
families as possible to attend this event. The South Carolina General
Assembly is considering several bills which would affect homeschooling
families. At any time, they could introduce legislation to further
restrict homeschooling.

In my 22 years at HSLDA, I have seen how effective capitol lobby days
are in preventing bad legislation. A face-to-face meeting between a
legislator and a homeschooling family gives the legislator the
opportunity to see firsthand the positive benefits of homeschooling.
Informed homeschooling constituents who meet with and demonstrate
interest in their legislator's activities provide that legislator with
reasons to vote in favor of maintaining homeschool freedom. If a
legislator never meets a homeschooler, he may have no reason to
support parental freedom to homeschool and may vote against
homeschooling if presented with the issue.

In addition to protecting your freedom, the SCHEA Home School Day at
the Capitol provides a great opportunity to your children for a field
trip to learn about state government and how laws are made in South
Carolina.

Plan ahead and make an appointment with your legislators. Take
advantage of this opportunity. Don't miss this year's great event!

On the agenda:
> "How South Carolina State Government Works and How You Can
Participate In It"
> The AAA Band under the directorship of Ms. Barb Rollins, the
Midlands Home School Band under the directorship of Mr. Jim Gill, and
the Charleston Home School Band under the directorship of Mr. Mike
Doll
> Tours of the State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion available
(pre-registration is required for these tours)
> The scavenger hunt will allow you to learn about the Capitol grounds
while having fun!

Below are MORE reasons to attend the Home School Day at the Capitol:
> Dispel any negative myths of the homeschool movement.
> Give legislators an understanding of the large numbers of
homeschoolers within the state.
> Spend one-on-one time with your legislator.
> Show legislators that the homeschool movement is alive and well.
