====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Oklahoma: Legislative Update-Calls Requested Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: As you may know, House Bill 1384, the Parent's Bill of Rights legislation authored by Rep. Kern, has been put on the House floor agenda. This means that it could come up for a vote at any time. House Bill 1384 is a bill that recognizes the fundamental right of parents to direct the custody, control, and education of their children. Both HSLDA and ParentalRights.org strongly support House Bill 1384. We believe this bill is important to the continued protection of parental rights that we have enjoyed in Oklahoma and in our nation for generations. Unfortunately, these rights seem to be increasingly under attack across the country. Oklahoma has a great reputation for standing for parental rights. In my opinion, it is because of their strong belief in parental rights that the Oklahoma constitutional delegates added protection for the right of parents to provide "other means of education" (i.e. home education) into the state constitution. Please contact your state representative in support of House Bill 1384. Two other bills that we have been following, House Bills 1027 and 1906, have recently died. For more information on these bills please see http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17549 REQUESTED ACTION: 1) Please contact your state representative and give him or her this message in your own words: "Please vote in favor of House Bill 1384. This bill will ensure that Oklahoma remains a strong supporter of parental rights in the care, custody, and upbringing of their children. As a parent I believe that my primary responsibility to teach and raise my children to be upstanding Oklahomans and a testimony to our pioneer spirit. Please support parental rights and support House Bill 1384." You can find your state representative by going to: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17548 and putting in your address. You only need to contact your state representative. There is no need to indicate that you are a homeschool parent. BACKGROUND The right to homeschool is based on parents' fundamental right to direct the education and upbringing of their children, and HSLDA has been in the center of the fight to preserve these rights for more than 25 years. While many courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have affirmed parental rights in a variety of circumstances, some recent decisions have given reason for concern that recognition of parental responsibility and authority is eroding. Consequently, there is a movement underway to amend the U.S. Constitution to protect this fundamental right. We believe it is also important that individual states take a stronger stand to support parental rights. Visit ParentalRights.org for more detailed information. If you are not yet a member of HSLDA and would like to help us fight for greater parental rights and homeschool freedom in Oklahoma please visit http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17550 . If you would like to be put on our email list to receive vital e-lerts you may sign up at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17551 . Thank you for your part in fighting for freedom in Oklahoma! Feel free to forward this to your friends who are homeschooling but may not be part of HSLDA, OCHEC, or CHEF of OK. Sincerely, Thomas J (Tj) Schmidt HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> "I saved my entire membership fee with one discount" "When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
