====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Connecticut -- Calls Needed to Defeat Bills Affecting Your Parental Rights Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Your calls and emails are needed to defeat two Connecticut bills that threaten your parental rights. Both of these bills are scheduled for a public hearing on Tuesday, March 5, before the Joint Committee on Children, so it is critical that members of this committee be contacted right away. First is Raised House Bill 6499, which would establish a task force on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). One of the task force's purposes would be to urge the U.S. Congress to ratify this dangerous treaty. The UNCRC would turn the parent-child relationship on its head so that parents would essentially become nothing more than facilitators of the choices of their children. Second is Raised Senate Bill 1009, which would require the Connecticut Department of Children and Families and the Department of Social Services to "establish a program to evaluate the well-being of children throughout the state." There is no indication of how this evaluation would be done or what standards would be used to determine a child's "well-being." 1. Action Requested: Please call or email as many members of the Joint Committee on Children as possible with this message or a similar message in your own words: "Please vote against Raised House Bill 6499 that would establish a task force to urge the U.S. Congress to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This international treaty threatens the right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children." "Please vote against Raised Senate Bill 1009, which would require the Department of Children and Families and the Department of Social Services to evaluate the well-being of every child in the state. Any such action would be unwarranted and would constitute a violation of family privacy." When emailing members of the Committee, we recommend that you put in the subject line: "I oppose Bills 6499 and 1009." The members of the Committee are as follows: Sen. Dante Bartolomeo, Co-Chair (D-13) 1-800-842-1420 http://www.senatedems.ct.gov/Bartolomeo-mailform.php Rep. Diana S. Urban, Co-Chair (D-043) 1-800-842-8267 Diana.Urban@cga.ct.gov Sen.
