====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Landmark Parents' Rights Bill Heads to Governor Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Today Delegate Brenda Pogge's parents' rights bill, HB 1642, passed its last legislative hurdle and will now head to the governor for his signature. We owe a deep debt of gratitude to Del. Pogge for standing up for the parents of Virginia. Most politicians are content to wait for a disaster and then try to pick up the pieces. She had the vision to see that there was already on the horizon a threat to your basic ability to raise your children according to your best judgment. She stood tall when the folks who think the government can raise your kids better than you can had crazy objections to the bill. And she worked with leaders of both parties to develop language that earned broad consensus support. Your many phone calls helped the entire General Assembly know that you expected them to do their job and protect your rights. You were the army that backed up the words of Del. Pogge. The Family Foundation http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17328 put its complete support behind the bill and provided extremely helpful boots-on-the-ground support. And ParentalRights.org was the spearhead for the entire effort. If you are not a member of both of these organizations, I urge you to consider joining. They are fully worthy of your support. The bill was for all parents, not just homeschoolers, but two homeschool organizations worked hard and long for the bill: the Home Educators Association of Virginia and Home School Legal Defense Association. The bill now heads to Governor McDonnell's desk for his signature. (SB 908 also passed and will head to his desk.) Oh, did I forget? No more phone calls are needed!
