====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Calls Needed to Stop Common Core Standards Bill Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Your calls and emails are needed to stop Mississippi Senate Bill 2056, which involves the implementation of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for college readiness. The CCSS are standards published by the National Governors Association in 2010 for public schools. But Senate Bill 2056 would extend the application of the CCSS to college readiness and thus college admission. State colleges and universities in Mississippi may determine whether to admit a student based on his or her performance in courses whose contents reflect the CCSS. Obviously this would discriminate against the vast majority of homeschool graduates whose secondary curriculum was not based on the CCSS to the extent that they would probably be denied entrance to a Mississippi college or university. Senate Bill 2056 passed the Senate on February 13. It is now in the House Universities and Colleges Committee, which could vote on this bill at any time. Members of the committee need to know that Mississippi homeschoolers do not want this bill to become law. Action Requested 1. Please call and/or email members of the House Universities and Colleges Committee with this message or something similar in your own words: "Please vote against Senate Bill 2056, which would extend the application of Common Core State Standards to college readiness. Students who graduate from a nonpublic school should not have to use a public school curriculum in order to be admitted to college."
