====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Calls Needed--Homeschool Curriculum Bill Passes House Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Despite a well-intended effort in the House Education Committee to remove nonpublic schools from the effects of Mississippi House Bill 637, which would impose curriculum and graduation requirements on homeschoolers, this bill remains as much of a threat to your freedom as it ever did. It passed the House of Representatives on February 13 and is now being considered by the Senate Education Committee. Your calls and emails to members of the committee are needed to stop this bill before it goes any further. House Bill 637 would require all students, including those in a home instruction program, to take and pass a course in personal finance before earning a high school diploma. The bill states that the State Board of Education shall implement a "financial literacy curriculum" by the 2014-2015 school year. While the concept of teaching financial responsibility is a good idea, this bill is objectionable for at least three reasons. First, Mississippi law does not now mandate any courses to be taught in a home instruction program, so this would be the first required course. Second, and even more significant, the content of this course would be prescribed by the State Board of Education. Homeschoolers would not be permitted to choose the curriculum that is compatible with their values and philosophy. Third, for the first time in the history of Mississippi homeschooling, the state would impose a requirement for a student to receive a diploma from a home instruction program. Members of the Senate Education Committee need to know that homeschooling families oppose this unnecessary imposition of a required course and graduation requirements for home instruction programs. Action Requested 1. Please call and/or email members of the Senate Education Committee with this message or something similar in your own words: "Please vote against House Bill 637 which would require students in a home instruction program to take and pass a course in personal finance developed by the State Board of Education. No homeschool student would be permitted to receive a high school diploma without first passing this course. Parents who are homeschooling should be able to choose course materials for subjects taught."
