State Board of Education Working Session on Compulsory Attendance Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, The District of Columbia State Board of Education is holding a meeting to discuss changes to the District's compulsory attendance regulations. The proposed revisions would include a requirement for homeschoolers to keep attendance records in the same manner as public and private schools. As you know, homeschooling allows curriculum and hours to be designed for the needs of the individual student and family. Forcing homeschools to comply with the rigid attendance structure of public and private schools is an unwarranted restriction of freedom. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. at 441 4th Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20001, in the Old Council Chambers, located on the lobby level of the building. ACTION REQUESTED Please consider attending the meeting and giving testimony. Ethan Reedy, homeschooling father and president of the D.C. Home Educators Association, will also be speaking to the board to advocate for D.C. homeschoolers. The meeting is open to the public, and a strong homeschool showing will help remind the board of the importance of these issues to their constituents. If you wish to speak you should contact the board as soon as possible at sboe@dc.gov. The board has requested that you bring 15 copies of your testimony. Although the board had requested notification by Monday (yesterday) it is worth emailing and requesting to be on the agenda if you wish to be heard.
