====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia--Call Now to Put "Education" into Parental Rights Bill Dear Virginia HSLDA Members and Friends: Please help as we revise our request for phone calls in support of the parental rights bills! ACTION REQUESTED The message we would now like you to give members of the House Courts of Justice Committee is simply: "Please support the inclusion of the word 'education' in SB 908. A parent's right to make decisions about his child's education should be protected." Please call your delegate if he or she is listed below as a member of the committee. It is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler since this bill affects all parents. Use this link to see who your delegate is: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17188 Many members of the committee were not present when the final vote was taken on HB 1642 (the companion bill to SB 908). This makes your phone calls in support especially important. BACKGROUND Our last e-lert asked you to call committee members and ask them to support SB 908 "as is." However, we believe the best strategy in light of recent developments is to amend SB 908 to match Delegate Pogge's HB 1642, but--very importantly--with the inclusion of "education" as one of the areas as to which parents have a fundamental right to make decisions. Thus we now support amending SB 908, so long as it still protects your right to make education decisions, and otherwise matches HB 1642. We expect SB 908 to come up for a hearing in House Courts of Justice very soon. The office of the United States Attorney General--the highest legal officer of our nation--recently said (and we believe said wrongly) that a parent does not have a fundamental right to homeschool. This is profoundly troubling. And it lends urgency to our determination to obtain a statue in Virginia stating unequivocally that a parent has a fundamental right to make educational decisions for his child.
