====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Mississippi: Calls Needed to Oppose Compulsory School Attendance Age Bill Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Your calls are needed to stop Mississippi House Bill 779, which would expand state control over education in Mississippi. Current law requires school attendance beginning at age 6. House Bill 779 would lower this to age 5 and delete the provision allowing parents to disenroll a child from public school kindergarten while the child is under 6 years old. If this bill passes, homeschooling parents will have to file their annual Certificate of Enrollment a year earlier than is now required and deal with attendance officers in the process. It would add another year of homeschooling for every child, regardless of the child's level of maturity or readiness to begin formal instruction at age 5. Unfortunately, House Bill 779 passed the House Education Committee on February 5. It is now in the full House of Representatives where it may be voted on at any time. In fact, the deadline for original floor action by the House is this coming Thursday, February 14. Members of the House need to know that Mississippi families oppose this unnecessary change in the law that would have potentially detrimental effects on children. ACTION REQUESTED: 1. Please call and/or email your state representative with this message or something similar in your own words: "Please vote against House Bill 779 which would lower Mississippi's compulsory school attendance age from 6 to 5. Parents, not state officials, are best able to determine when their child is ready for formal education." When contacting your state representative, it is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler. This issue is broader than homeschooling. This is a parental rights issue affecting all Mississippi families with children. You can find your state representative's contact information at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17144 . 2. Please forward this email to every family you know who is not a member of HSLDA and urge them to contact their state representative about this bill. BACKGROUND: Many education experts have concluded that beginning a child's formal education too early may actually result in burnout and poor scholastic performance later. Lowering the compulsory attendance age erodes the authority of parents who are in the best position to determine when their child's formal education should begin. This bill would restrict parents' freedom to decide if their children are ready for school. Another significant impact of expanding the compulsory attendance age would be an inevitable tax increase to pay for more classroom space and teachers to accommodate the additional students compelled to attend public school. To view the text of this bill, please go to http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17145 . For more information on compulsory attendance, please see our memorandum at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=11027 Please call or email today! Sincerely, Dewitt T.
