====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Oklahoma: Your Attendance Needed at the Capitol on Tuesday! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: As you know, the Oklahoma Home Educators' Capitol Day is next Tuesday on February 12, 2013. There are several bills that will impact homeschooling in Oklahoma and parental rights. We believe it is important for all homeschool families to be familiar with these bills and, if possible, attend Capitol Day. Pre-registration ends Sunday, so go to http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17141 and register now. While you can still come if you don't pre-register, it does make it easier for you to sign up for the various events and meetings that will be taking place on Tuesday. HSLDA and OCHEC are tracking multiple bills that will impact homeschooling families in Oklahoma. Among them are House Bill 1906, relating to extra-curricular activities; House Bill 1027, which creates the Oklahoma Opportunity Scholarship; and House Bill 1384, establishing the Parent's Bill of Rights. House Bill 1906 would enable homeschool students to participate in extra-curricular activities in their local public school. While HSLDA is generally neutral on this issue, we are concerned about this bill and what it could mean for the future of homeschool freedom in Oklahoma. House Bill 1027 would create a scholarship program that could pay state education money directly to a homeschool family. While HSLDA is very supportive of educational tax credits that homeschool families can take advantage of, there are concerns whenever state money is paid directly to an individual. The bill also is vague about what will be required to prove that a family is homeschooling. Finally, we are also very excited about the Parents' Bill of Rights legislation, House Bill 1384. This bill would prohibit the state from infringing upon parental rights unless it was the least restrictive means. This bill also reaffirms that the "liberty of parents to direct the upbringing, education, health care and mental health of their children is a fundamental right." For more information on these bills and any more HSLDA is tracking please go to: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17142 . Capitol Day is an important event for your family to attend. You will have the opportunity to sit in on a town hall meeting regarding the current bills that will impact homeschoolers, tour the Capitol, sit in on the opening session of the House or Senate, invite your legislator to lunch, watch a historical re-enactor, participate in a scavenger hunt, and attend a rally on the 2nd floor of the Capitol Building. Check-in and activities begin at 8:00 a.m. The scheduled speakers at the rally this year include Lt. Governor Todd Lamb, Rep. Josh Cockroft, Rep. Randy Grau, Rep. Jason Murphy, and HSLDA Staff Attorney Tj Schmidt. Over the years, the Oklahoma Home Educators' Capitol Day has been one of the best-attended events across the country within the homeschool community. I strongly believe that it is because of your attendance, and hundreds of other homeschooling families, that home education freedom in Oklahoma has remained strong. Over the years Oklahoma homeschool families have resisted several attempts by legislators to regulate them. All have failed due to your efforts and prayers. We would love to see the 2013 Oklahoma Home Educators' Capitol Day have the biggest attendance yet. Please plan now to bring your family to Oklahoma City and have a wonderful experience for your children and the future of home education freedom. Find out more information here: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=16904 . REQUESTED ACTION: 1) Come to the Capitol on February 12, 2013, to participate in the 28th Annual Home Educators' Capitol Day. If you or an older child would like to be a volunteer, please contact capitolday@ochec.com for more information. 2) If you can't come to the Home Education Day at the Capitol, please pray for the event. Contact your state legislators and get to know them beyond just the Home Educators' Capitol Day event. If desired, you could also donate to help defray the costs (over $3,000) of Capitol Day at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=16905 . 3) Check out the information on the current legislation in Oklahoma.
