====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Dear Virginia HSLDA Members and Friends: Two parental rights bills are making progress in the Virginia General Assembly, but only one of them, SB 908, explicitly protects your fundamental right to direct the education of your child. We need your phone calls to help this bill! Although SB 908 passed the Senate, it is now in some danger as it moves to the House of Delegates. When the House committee reviews SB 908 next week (possibly on Monday afternoon), they might refuse to accept the bill's language that explicitly protects your fundamental right to direct the education of your child. The committee earlier refused to accept that language in the companion bill, HB 1642. The result is that HB 1642, though still a good bill, is now significantly weaker than SB 908. We deeply appreciate the fact that the House committee last week (and subsequently the full House) historically endorsed the principle that parental rights in general are fundamental. But it's important to go beyond generalities and mention educational rights specifically. That's what SB 908 does, and it's important to protect that. Action Requested If your delegate is listed below, please call him or her--preferably today or Monday morning. Your message can be as simple as "Please vote to report SB 908 without any amendment." In the list below, we have indicated which delegates voted "yes" on HB 1642. If your delegate is one, please give him this message instead: "Thank you for supporting parents' rights as fundamental in your Feb. 1 vote on HB 1642. But please vote to report SB 908 without any amendment." Those not listed in this elert as "no" or "yes" votes were not present and did not vote. Here is the language of SB 908, the strong bill: "A parent has a fundamental right to direct the upbringing, education, and care of the parent's child." Here is the language of HB 1642, the weaker bill: "A parent has a fundamental right to make decisions concerning the care, custody, and control of the parent's child." If the House Committee reports SB 908 without amendment, as we are asking, and the House subsequently passes SB 908 as is, HB 1642 will no longer be necessary, and Delegate Pogge will withdraw her bill.
