====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Connecticut--Calls Needed to Defeat Bill Requiring Mandatory Mental Health Evaluations Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: There is another threatening bill in Connecticut that needs your attention. Your calls and emails are needed to defeat a bill that would impose mental health evaluations on all children by the state. Proposed Bill 169 would require that "local and regional boards of education and health care providers assess every child for social, emotional, behavioral and mental health to ensure the delivery of necessary services and interventions." These evaluations would be conducted even though there was no indication whatsoever that these children were in need of services or intervention. Further, from the wording of the proposed bill, it appears that these evaluations would have to be conducted twice, once by the board of education and once by an unspecified health care provider. No free society should subject its citizens to forced mental health evaluations for any purpose. This dangerous legislative proposal must be stopped in its tracks before it gains any momentum. Proposed Bill 169 is presently in the Committee on Children. We do not know when this bill would be considered, so please contact members of the Committee right away and express your opposition to it. Action Requested: 1. Please call or email as many members of the Committee on Children as possible with this message or a similar message in your own words: "Please vote against Proposed Bill 169, which would require that boards of education and health care providers assess every child for social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health without any basis to do so. These comprehensive, invasive evaluations would constitute an unwarranted invasion of family privacy." When emailing members of the Committee, we recommend that you put in the subject line: "I oppose Bill 169." The members of the Committee are as follows: Sen. Dante Bartolomeo, Co-Chair (D-13) 1-800-842-1420 http://www.senatedems.ct.gov/Bartolomeo-mailform.php Rep. Diana S. Urban, Co-Chair (D-043) 1-800-842-8267 Diana.Urban@cga.ct.gov Sen.
