Dear Virginia HSLDA Members and Friends: We're a huge step closer to having a law in Virginia declaring that parents' rights are important enough to be identified as "fundamental" rights--rather than merely ordinary rights. HB 1642 passed the House today by a solid vote of 70 to 30. A very similar bill, SB 908, passed the Senate last week with a strong bipartisan vote of 26 to 14. Both bills declare parents' rights to be fundamental, which is the core issue. But the Senate bill is actually stronger because of slight differences in wording. The House version will now go to committee in the Senate, and the Senate version will go to committee in the House. Since the Senate version is better, we hope the House committee will report out the Senate version as is, with no amendment, and send it to the House floor for a vote. Your phone calls were crucial in getting this far! As I walked the halls of the Virginia General Assembly over the last two weeks and testified in meeting after meeting, legislative staffers frequently told me that they had received many, many calls in support of these bills--and virtually none in opposition.
