====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Hawaii: Senate Education Committee Considers Bill Requiring Homeschoolers to Enroll in Public School Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Today, Wednesday, January 30, 2013, the Senate Education Committee will hear testimony concerning Senate Bill 922 http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17045 . The bill allows for homeschool participation in public school sports, but there is an important catch: all homeschool families will now be required to enroll their children as students in the local public school, even if they have no intention of ever participating in extracurricular sports. HSLDA strongly opposes SB 922. Hawaii's current notice requirements for homeschoolers were the result of many dialogues between homeschooling families and state officials. While families send an annual notice of intent to their local public school superintendent, homeschooling children do not fall under the auspices of the public school, and parents retain complete autonomy to direct the education of their child as they see fit. If passed, SB 922 will dramatically redefine the relationship between homeschooling families and the public schools, from one of notice and co-existence to one of enrollment and oversight. Parents, not the government, have the fundamental right to direct the education of their children.
