====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Montana--Compulsory Attendance Age Bill Tabled Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Good news! Montana Senate Bill 13 was tabled by the Senate Education and Cultural Resources Committee on January 28, 2013. After first voting to amend the bill, the committee voted 6-4 against its passage, effectively killing it. The final votes were as follows: Sen. Jim Peterson (Chair) (R) (SD 15-Buffalo) YES Sen. Llew Jones (Vice Chair) (R) (SD 14-Conrad) NO Sen. Elsie Arntzen (R) (SD 27-Billings) NO Sen. Taylor Brown (R) (SD 22-Huntley) YES Sen. Robyn Driscoll (D) (SD 26-Billings) YES Sen. Tom Facey (D) (SD 48-Missoula) YES Sen. Dave Lewis (R) (SD 42-Helena) NO Sen. Eric Moore (R) (SD 20-Miles City) NO Sen. Sharon Stewart-Peregoy (D) (SD 21-Crow Agency) NO Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy (D) (SD 16-Box Elder) NO Senate Bill 13 would have increased the compulsory school attendance age in Montana from 16 to 18, graduation from high school, or receipt of a GED, thus requiring parents to comply with the homeschool law for an additional two years unless their child first graduated from high school or obtained a GED. It is unlikely that this bill will receive further attention during this legislative session. However, we will continue to track its status to make sure it is not revived. Many thanks to all of you who contacted members of the Senate Education and Cultural Resources Committee to express your opposition to this bill. There is no doubt that homeschoolers made a difference in this committee's action. To view the text of this bill, please go to http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=17042 Sincerely, Dewitt T.
