Dear Indiana Members and friends,

Indiana State Senator Scott Schneider (R-Indianapolis) has introduced
Senate Bill 193 opposing the Common Core Standards in Indiana and
seeking to repeal them in the state. The main concern for
homeschooling families regarding the Common Core Standards is that
this initiative is another step towards nationalizing curriculum and
instruction that could limit our freedom to education our children as
we see fit.

We would like you to make some calls in support of this bill and come
to the Capitol if you can. There is a rally tomorrow in support of
this effort that you may be interested in attending at noon and a
briefing on the Common Core Standards at 11:00 a.m. You can all stay
for the hearing on the bill at 1:30 p.m.

Senate Bill 193 has been assigned to the Senate Committee on Education
and Career Development and will be heard in the Senate Chambers on
January 16 at 1:30 p.m. In preparation for this Committee meeting,
please contact you state senator and ask them to support this bill.
Please act now!

Requested Action:

1) Call your Senator and give them this message in your own words:
Please support Senate Bill 193. This bill would return the control of
Indiana educational standards to where they belong here in Indiana. I
believe that Hoosiers need to determine the educational standards of
our state and not blindly follow the Common Core Standards Initiative.

You can find the contact information for your state senator by going
to our Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=16839
and type in your ZIP Code.

2) Come to the Capitol. If you are able to come to the Capitol in
support of this bill there are several things that you can do while
there. At 11:00 in is a private briefing for homeschoolers and others
who are concerned about the Common Core Standards. At noon there will
be a rally in support of Senate Bill 193 in the atrium. At 1:30 p.m.
the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development will hear the
bill in the Senate Chambers. You can contact Heather Crossin at (317)
796-0990 or Erin Tuttle at (317) 340-1357 for more information about
any of these events.

Senate Bill 193: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=16840

Background:

The Common Core Standards Initiative was aggressively touted by
President Obama as a key part of his national educational plan. Each
state has received significant pressure from the federal government to
adopt the Common Core Standards. States began implementing the Common
Core Standards after the Obama administration required the adoption of
these standards as one of the criteria it would consider in
determining which states would receive federal "Race to the Top"
money. For more information on the CCSI, please read this recent
article by HSLDA's Director of Federal Relations, Will Estrada:
http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=16841

Indiana has adopted the Common Core Standards in 2010 after the State
Board of Education voted to approve these requirements as Indiana's
new academic standards for K-12 schools.

Please act now in support of Senate Bill 193. Thank you for your stand
for Hoosier control of Indiana educational standards and for freedom!

Please feel free to forward to others who may be interested in
educational freedom in Indiana.

"When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could
get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off
our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double
what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's
license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
