Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Wednesday morning we received word that proponents of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) are pushing for a September vote in the Senate. As I explained in an earlier article http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=15659 , this treaty is bad news for American sovereignty and bad news for families. We must stop it from coming to a vote in September. So I urge you to visit the local offices of your U.S. senators on Monday, September 17 - the anniversary of the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. Some allied organizations are coordinating group visits, and I would encourage you to take advantage of those if you can. But whether you go with a group or invest five crucial minutes on your own, an in-person visit is by far the single greatest impact you can have. It far outweighs emails or even a phone call! Our goal is to have at least a dozen constituents visit each senator. So if you plan to participate, please let us know by sending an email to senatevisits@parentalrights.org. Who Do I Need to Visit? The 15 senators listed here http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=15660 are already committed to stand with us and do not require your visit, though you might drop by long enough to say, "Thank you." If the offices of your two senators are not listed, you can find them by using our online Legislative Toolbox: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=15662 Either way, I cannot urge you strongly enough: please visit your senators on September 17! What Do I Say? Here are a few talking points you might share when you visit: > Under Article VI of the U.S. Constitution, the CRPD will become the "supreme law of the land," overriding anything to the contrary in local, state, or federal law. > Parents of disabled children know better than anyone what it is like to have bureaucrats and officials second-guessing their every decision. Article 7 of the CRPD will take away their right to be the ultimate decision makers for their child. > The Understandings adopted by the Senate are poorly worded and do not have the legal effect proponents claim they will. The so-called "private action" understanding, for instance, does not uphold "current" U.S. law. Omission of the word "current" means the U.S. will be obligated to make changes in our law in order to fulfill our commitment under the treaty. > Ratifying the CRPD would be the first time we have obligated our nation to recognize social, economic, and cultural entitlements and privileges as "rights" under domestic law. But your senators realize this, too - which is why your visit can be so very important. Please join us in standing up for America and for your rights this Constitution Day.
