====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Commissioner's New Labor Day "Deadline" Approaching August 31, 2012 Dear Vermont members and friends of homeschooling, First, thank you to all the families who came to the Department of Education's meeting last week to show your opposition to the Commissioner's unprecedented policy change. We had an encouraging turnout, and it was evident that homeschoolers were well-represented in the gallery. We are hopeful that your presence will open up further opportunities for comment from homeschoolers on the Commissioner's policy change in the months ahead. Unfortunately, we were not able to present our objections to the Commissioner himself, because he was not present at the Board's meeting. To my knowledge, neither state leaders in Vermont nor HSLDA have received word from the Commissioner informing us that he is either rescinding or suspending his policy. As such, it appears that the Commissioner is still planning to implement this policy, even though HSLDA strongly believes he has no statutory or other legal authority to do so. While HSLDA firmly believes that this policy transcends the authority of the Commissioner, families who wish to avoid any issues with the Commissioner's Office should plan on submitting their homeschool enrollment notices prior to Labor Day. The Commissioner's new policy stipulates that mailed enrollment notices must be postmarked prior to Labor Day, and notices which are e-mailed, faxed, or hand-delivered must be received prior to 4:30 PM EDT on Tuesday, September 4. Families who are unable to meet this deadline, do not meet this deadline, or otherwise encounter resistance from the Commissioner's Office, should contact HSLDA immediately for assistance. Sincerely, Peter K. Kamakawiwoole, Jr. HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
