Iowa--Reminder: CPI Form Filing Deadline August 26

Dear Iowa HSLDA Members:

This is just a quick reminder that your Competent Private Instruction
(CPI) form, which should be accompanied by HSLDA's "Privacy
Notification Form," is due by August 26.

If your child turns 16, or is not yet 6, as of Sept. 15, you need not
file a CPI form.

A few officials have given families CPI forms that local school
districts have modified. These forms should be viewed with caution. A
district that thinks it has the authority to modify the CPI form (and
they really don't!) may include unauthorized demands. If a school
district offers you a modified CPI form, please send us a copy so we
can review it.

In order to protect the privacy of information on your CPI form,
include HSLDA's "Privacy Notification Form" if your child is dual
enrolled or enrolled in a HSAP (home school assistance program) or use
HSLDA's "Privacy Caution to Public School Officials" if your child is
not dual enrolled or in a HSAP. Ideally, the privacy form and the CPI
form should be mailed at the same time. We recommend that you mail
them return receipt requested, and file the postal receipt when it
comes. Without the privacy form, your school district may release
information about your family to the public.

Although the privacy form could be sent after your CPI form, you may
be exposed to privacy violations that happen before the school system
receives it.

To get the form, go to HSLDA's Iowa page
( ), and click on "Iowa Forms
and Other Resources." You will need to enter your member user name and
password to access the forms (there are instructions on what to do if
you don't have one).

Although use of the HSLDA form is not mandatory, other forms or
methods of asserting your privacy rights may not be effective.

Have a happy and rewarding academic year! And remember we are here to
help you. Our staff have expert knowledge in the areas of special
needs students, struggling learners, high school issues, and more, and
we would be happy to answer your questions.
