====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Mississippi--Certificate of Enrollment Reminder Dear Mississippi Members: For those of you planning to comply with Mississippi's home instruction law for the 2012-2013 school year, we are providing the following information by way of reminder. A parent, guardian, or custodian of a child desiring to provide a home instruction program must file a certificate of enrollment which includes the names, address, and telephone number of parents and children, dates of birth of children, and a "simple description of the type of education" the children are receiving. The form of the certificate of enrollment is prepared by the Office of Compulsory School Attendance of the State Department of Education. It may be obtained from the school attendance officer of the school district in which you reside. The certificate must be returned to the school attendance officer by September 15 of each school year. Some school districts may attempt to require that a curricular description be included with the certificate of enrollment. A "simple description of the type of education" the children are receiving does not include a description of your child's curriculum. Rather, you may simply indicate that you intend to provide a home instruction program. Please note that HSLDA will defend any member family whose right to teach their children at home is challenged by the state--even if their religious convictions prohibit them from complying with the state homeschool law. The information in this email is provided to those who intend to comply with state law and to assist you in meeting the statutory deadline.
