====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== California: Stand against Curfew at Council Meeting Dear Friends of Liberty: HSLDA sent out an e-lert http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=14743 two weeks ago notifying our members and friends of homeschooling that the San Ramon City Council is considering implementing a daytime curfew. At the public hearing on May 8, the Council decided to put off a decision until May 22. Several liberty-minded citizens attended and testified, but we need more for the next hearing. According to one attendee at the last hearing, "We need more people to turn out, and fill out speaker cards and give the allowed three-minute talks at the next meeting...Literally 40 people could fill the room and make an impression on the Council." That's what we'd like to do! It appears that one of the county staff has proposed the ordinance since some other areas surrounding San Ramon have daytime curfews. But there's a real question as to whether San Ramon even has a problem that needs to be fixed! San Ramon schools have an attendance rate of 96%, well above the state average. And San Ramon citizens have questioned whether just adding a small fine will solve the problem of habitual truants. The curfew as written will also affect retailers who sell to public school students who are allowed to leave campus for lunch. http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=14742 ACTION REQUESTED: 1. Let other people know about the proposed curfew. This affects all minors, not just homeschooled students. 2. Come to the hearing scheduled for May 22, 7:00 p.m. in the San Ramon Council Chamber at the 2222 Camino Ramon, San Ramon, CA 94583, to express your opposition to the proposed daytime curfew. Homeschooler Erika Porter has graciously volunteered to be a local point of contact if you have questions or suggestions on fighting this curfew. Her email is nodecafgirl@gmail.com. HSLDA will be sending the City Council a letter opposing the daytime curfew. If you would like a copy of the letter, please contact me at darren@hslda.org. Standing with you for freedom, Darren A.
