Mandatory Kindergarten Vote Postponed ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JOINT LEGISLATIVE ALERT UPDATE- May 9, 2012 From: Mike Smith, HSLDA--Roy Hanson, Family Protection Ministries ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill: AB 1772 (as amended 4/11/12) - Mandatory Kindergarten Author: State Assemblymember Joan Buchanan Position: Strongly OPPOSE Thank you for your important phone calls! Status: The Assembly Appropriations Committee decided on May 2 to postpone the final committee vote on AB 1772 until near the end of May. We will keep you updated as further information becomes available. Please be alert, as we may need your help again in the near future. Summary of Concern: AB 1772 would make kindergarten mandatory before taking the 1st grade, forcing one more year to a child's education. AB 1772, as recently amended, does indirectly what the last version of this bill did directly--that is to have "everyone" starting school at 5 years of age.
