California: Mandatory Kindergarten Vote Postponed

Mandatory Kindergarten Vote Postponed

From: Mike Smith, HSLDA--Roy Hanson, Family Protection Ministries

Bill: AB 1772 (as amended 4/11/12) - Mandatory Kindergarten
Author: State Assemblymember Joan Buchanan

Position: Strongly OPPOSE

Thank you for your important phone calls!

Status: The Assembly Appropriations Committee decided on May 2 to
postpone the final committee vote on AB 1772 until near the end of
May. We will keep you updated as further information becomes
available. Please be alert, as we may need your help again in the
near future.

Summary of Concern:

AB 1772 would make kindergarten mandatory before taking the 1st grade,
forcing one more year to a child's education.

AB 1772, as recently amended, does indirectly what the last version of
this bill did directly--that is to have "everyone" starting school at
5 years of age.

There are serious problems with this new proposed legislation that are
outlined in our previous AB 1772 Action Alert, which you can read on
our website at

Action Items:
No action is needed at this time. A big thank-you to those who
contacted the Assembly expressing your opposition to the bill.

"When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could
get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off
our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double
what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's
license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
