====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Senate Set to Stiff-Arm Homeschoolers? Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, After a compelling 240-74 victory in the House, HB 1440 faces a fight for its life on the floor of the Senate this Wednesday, April 18, 2012. Sponsor Jim Forsythe has promised to fight for the bill, but the Senate Transportation Committee voted 4-1 to send it to a "study committee" where it would likely die if the full Senate concurs with this recommendation. Senator Forsyth needs your help today! He also needs help from the leadership of the majority in the Senate, Senate President Peter Bragdon and Majority Leader Jeb Bradley, who, given the significant majority, should be able to pass this safe, common sense legislation that will further freedom in New Hampshire. It appears that the Senate's primary concern is safety. But this legislation has been successful in a number of states all over the country, which causes one to wonder if the real reason is influence from traditional driver's instructors or just simple paternalism. Regardless of the senators' motivation, you can make a difference by contacting them today by phone, email or an in-person visit and delivering a solid message that HB 1440 ought to pass as passed by the House! ACTION REQUESTED: Please contact your senator, Senate President Peter Bragdon, and Senate Majority Leader Jeb Bradley today. Ask your senator to vote for HB 1440 as passed by the House and ask senators Bragdon and Bradley to lead! Feel free to use the following message in your own words: "Please exercise leadership and ask your colleagues to vote 'ought to pass' on HB 1440 as passed by the House. The driver's education freedom bill will provide for safe, effective, and affordable driver's education programs for New Hampshire parents, many of whom struggle will this ever-increasing expense. HB 1440 can potentially save New Hampshire families thousands of dollars and provide options for their children's driver's training. It is wrong to suggest that parents are unqualified or can't be trusted with their child's driver's training. Experience in states where similar provisions have passed indicates that parent-supervised driver's training is safe and effective; and the three-year trial program in New Hampshire also provides appropriate safeguards for potential abuse. This bill will also make it easier for middle and lower income families to provide opportunities for their children that are currently unavailable due to expensive driver's training programs. Instead of representing the interests of a few expensive driving schools, you should look out for what is best for the majority of your constituents and our children. HB 1440 should pass, and I urge you to support it." Will you please take a moment right now to call or email these senators?
