====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Driver's Ed Bill Needs Your Help! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Did you know that House Bill 1440 is being spearheaded by homeschooling teen Jacqueline Roland? This involved teen has been working with Representative Laura Jones and Senator Jim Forsythe to fix a problem that affects all New Hampshire families - the lack of affordable options in driver's education. This is a David and Goliath story. Consequently, I am asking all friends of homeschooling and supporters of parental rights to show up at the Senate Transportation Committee next Thursday, April 5, at 10:30 a.m. This could be your civics field trip for the year! It is being reported that all 300 driving instructors from New Hampshire will be there to protect their monopoly. Will you please stand with Jacqueline, Representative Jones and Senator Forsythe in favor of this bill? You and I both know that when New Hampshire homeschoolers put their minds to something - IT HAPPENS! We have done a lot of protesting against encroachments on our freedom in the past five years - let's demonstrate in favor of good legislation that will have a positive impact on freedom and family budgets. You will have the opportunity to testify in favor of HB 1440, if you like. But even if you do not wish to testify, your attendance at the hearing will send a clear message that New Hampshire families support this common sense bill. The hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. in Legislative Office Building 306-308, but it may be moved to Representatives Hall - they know when there is something going on involving homeschoolers they need to be prepared for large crowds! Many traditional driver's education instructors and lobbyists will be in attendance opposing HB 1440, so it is critical that homeschool families attend this hearing. And by the way, Jacqueline is requesting that when you come that you wear blue. Any shade is fine. This way the Senators will see just how many supporters are there - hopefully a lot! ACTION REQUESTED: 1) Please attend the hearing on Thursday April 5, 2012. And wear blue! 2) If you have not already done so, please make personal contact by phone, postal mail, or appointment with the following five senators by April 5, 2012. It is important that you deliver a personal message to these Senators and explain how this bill will positively affect your family. Please deliver the following message in your own words: "Please vote "ought to pass" on HB 1440 as amended by the House. The driver's education freedom bill will provide for safe, effective, and affordable driver's education programs for New Hampshire parents, many of whom struggle will this ever-increasing expense. HB 1440 can potentially save New Hampshire families thousands of dollars and provide options for their children's driver's training. It is not only offensive to suggest that parents are unqualified or can't be trusted with their child's driver training - it is false. Experience in states where similar provisions have passed indicates that parent-supervised driver's training is safe and effective; and the three-year trial program in New Hampshire also provides appropriate safeguards from potential abuse. This bill will also make it easier for middle and lower income families to provide opportunities for their children that are currently unavailable due to expensive driver's training programs. Instead of representing the interests of a few expensive driving schools, you should look out for what is best for the majority of your constituents and our children. HB 1440 should pass, and I urge you to support it in committee and on the floor of the Senate with a roll call vote." Senator Jim Rausch (Derry) - Transportation Committee Chair Statehouse Room 124 107 North Main Street Concord, NH 03301 (603) 271-3091 Senator David Boutin (Hooksett) - Transportation Committee Vice-Chair Legislative Office Building Room 102-B 33 North State Street Concord, NH 03301 (603) 271-3092 Senator Nancy Stiles (Hampton) Legislative Office Building Room 103-A 33 North State Street Concord, NH 03301 (603) 271-3093 Senator Molly Kelly (Keene) Statehouse Room 120 107 North Main Street Concord, NH 03301 (603) 271-3207 Senator Peter Bragdon (Milford) - President of the Senate Statehouse Room 302 107 North Main Street Concord, NH 03301 (603) 271-2111 BACKGROUND: HB 1440 would permit a person who is 15 1/2 years old to fulfill driver's education requirements by enrolling in an online driver's education course approved by the Department of Safety. This could save individual homeschooling families thousands of dollars in unnecessary fees and expenses. But this opportunity is at risk because of pressure from organized paid driving school lobbyists trying to keep customers in their expensive schools. Let's all get behind HB 1440 to advance freedom for homeschooling parents! We greatly value you and your support--it is a privilege to serve you!
