====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 23, 2012 Maine--Call Immediately to Support Amending LD 1503! A crucial vote on expanding compulsory attendance age in Maine is expected today! Please call your Maine state representative immediately and ask him or her to support the Espling amendment and the Dow amendment to LD 1503. Either one of these amendments would keep the compulsory attendance age as-is. Without either amendment, compulsory attendance would start at age 6 (rather than the current 7), and would not end until age 18 (rather than the current 17). These amendments needs your support! REQUESTED ACTION 1. Call your Maine state representative promptly and ask them to vote "yes" on the Espling amendment and the Dow amendment to LD 1503. Your message can be as simple as: "Please vote YES on the Espling Amendment and the Dow Amendment to LD 1503. This will protect parents' rights but give schools the additional tools they want for dealing with truancy." Use our Legislative Toolbox and type in your ZIP code to determine who your Maine state representative is. http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13833 The Clerk of the House can take a message for your representative at (207) 287-1400. Or call (207) 287-1430 to leave a message for a Democratic representative, or (207) 287-1440 for a Republican. If neither amendment is adopted, LD 1503 would undermine the freedom of all parents. It is not necessary for you to identify yourself as a homeschooler. 2. Please forward this to other Maine homeschoolers! BACKGROUND LD 1503 also changes truancy and expulsion procedures. This is not problematic for homeschool families. Homeschoolers of Maine (HOME) and HSLDA are united in opposing the attempt to expand compulsory school attendance age. For additional reasons to oppose expanding compulsory attendance age, refer to our earlier elerts on this bill. Thank you for your calls on behalf of freedom in Maine! Sincerely, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Can you look at the clouds and tell the direction of the wind? An interesting phenomenon of wind is that it can blow in multiple directions at the same time, at different heights from the ground. But usually there is a prevailing wind. HSLDA watches the gusts and monitors the prevailing trends of change in the legal climate of home education. So no matter which way the wind is blowing, we're there to protect your family.
