====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Missouri--Kansas City Daytime Curfew Battle Moves to Next Phase Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Responding to about 150 orderly daytime curfew opponents at Wednesday's City Council meeting, committee members postponed a final decision on Councilman Scott Wagner's daytime curfew plan for four weeks. This threat is still very much alive and kicking! Can we get 300 to attend the next meeting? If you attended the meeting yesterday, please make plans now to come to the next meeting--and bring another family with you! This will give us 300 voices to oppose the undermining of freedom. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and the 20 or so who spoke and kept the focus on liberty. Candy Roberts spoke on behalf of Families for Home Education. She reports that everyone was respectful and courteous. She tells me that those who spoke were articulate, passionate and persuasive. While the TV cameras rolled, pictures of well-behaved young homeschooled children were beamed across the city. Some of them spoke against the proposal, to enthusiastic applause. I expect many teachers wish they had such well-mannered students! Shortly before the meeting, Councilman Wagner made an essentially cosmetic change to his bill: he rephrased it so that it would function as a daytime curfew without actually calling it a daytime curfew. No one was fooled. A daytime curfew by any other name still disgracefully makes young people afraid to enjoy God's sunshine. A number of council members on the committee expressed sentiments in opposition to the bill. But sentiments can change on a moment's notice--and they don't kill ordinances. It's up to us to continue to hold them accountable to perform the number one job of every elected official: the protection of freedom. Thank you for standing with us to protect freedom! Sincerely, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> For as little as 33 cents a day...
