====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Maine--"School Choice" Bills Don't Threaten Homeschoolers Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Ed and Kathy Green of Homeschoolers of Maine recently asked HSLDA to review two bills Governor LePage is promoting in the Maine legislature that are getting some publicity. Here is our brief analysis of the bills, which are sometimes called "school choice" bills. LD 1854 would create the "Maine Open Enrollment Program." It would allow a student to enroll in a public or tuition-approved private school outside his own district of residence, under certain circumstances. It does not pose a direct threat to homeschool freedom. LD 1866 would, for the first time, let a private religious school receive government funds to pay for the tuition of students, if the school meets certain requirements. Currently, only "non-sectarian" or non-religious schools that meet certain requirements can receive taxpayer money for educating students. While this bill is obviously a serious threat to the autonomy of religious private schools, it is not a direct threat to homeschool freedom. Homeschool families have already made their "choice." They have chosen to have complete freedom over what books their children study, and complete freedom to integrate the truth about God into every subject. And they have chosen a proven academic winner. According to the landmark study by Dr. Lawrence Rudner, the average homeschool 8th-grade student scores the same on standardized tests as a12th-grade student who is not homeschooled. HSLDA will continue to monitor both of these bills. But with homeschooling, families enjoy both the best academic success, and the most freedom, of any form of education. It is no coincidence that success and freedom go hand in hand! Sincerely Yours, Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.
