====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Maryland--Delegate Alston to Withdraw Two Homeschool Bills Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Delegate Alston's office called our office this morning to say that she was going to withdraw two bills, HB 1049 and HB 980, that HSLDA along with Maryland Association of Christian Home Educators have opposed since they were filed. They had been scheduled for a hearing before the House Ways and Means Committee tomorrow, March 15. HB 1049 would have allowed public schools to award public school diplomas to homeschool students under certain circumstances. HB 980 would have allowed homeschoolers to receive direct financial assistance from public schools under certain circumstances. For more information on these bills and HSLDA's reasons for opposing them, go to our Maryland legislation page: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=14072 I traveled to Annapolis and had a long and fruitful conversation with Delegate Alston concerning her bills. She struck me as a person with a sincere interest in helping homeschool families. She listened carefully to my comments about the bills. It might have been possible to amend the bills in such a way as to earn the broad support of the homeschool community. But it is not ideal to try to conduct meaningful discussion on important bills under the pressure of looming legislative deadlines. Hand in Hand Educational Services also opposed the bills and worked to convince Del. Alston to withdraw them. The delegate's decision to withdraw the bills will allow for discussion in a more relaxed environment. We appreciate and respect her decision.
