====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Maine--Call to Support Amending LD 1503! Dear Maine HSLDA Members and Friends: More calls are needed to protect your freedom! If not amended, LD 1503 would expand compulsory school attendance from the 7th birthday down to the 6th, and from the 17th up to the 18th. Representative Ellie Espling will propose amending LD 1503 to take out all parts that expand the compulsory attendance age, while leaving in all the parts that deal with other topics. But her amendment needs your support! We need your calls today and the next several days to urge the Maine legislature to adopt the Espling amendment. REQUESTED ACTION 1. Call your Maine state representative and your Maine state senator promptly and ask them to vote "yes" on the Espling amendment to LD 1503. Your message can be as simple as: "Please vote YES on the Espling Amendment to LD 1503. This will protect parents' rights but give schools the additional tools they want for dealing with truancy." Use our Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13833 and type in your ZIP code to determine who your Maine state senator and Maine state representative is are. The Senate secretary, (207) 287-1540, can give your message to any senator. Or to leave a message for your Republican state senator, call (207) 287-1505. Or to leave a message for your Democratic state senator, call (207) 287-1515. For your Maine state representative, the Clerk of the House can take a message at (207) 287-1400. Or call (207) 287-1430 to leave a message for a Democratic representative, or (207) 287-1440 for a Republican. This bill, if the Espling amendment is not adopted, would undermine the freedom of all parents. It is not necessary for you to identify yourself as a homeschooler. 2. Please forward this to other Maine homeschoolers! BACKGROUND LD 1503 also changes truancy and expulsion procedures. This is not problematic for homeschool families. Homeschoolers of Maine (HOME) and HSLDA are united in opposing the attempt to expand compulsory school attendance age. Thank you for your calls on behalf of freedom in Maine!
