====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Action Needed to Oppose Law Targeting Homeschoolers February 23, 2012 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Homeschoolers may find themselves targeted by Senate Bill 191 that would make it mandatory for a student who has missed school to receive a habitual truancy citation. Utah already has a law concerning students who are habitually truant. This law defers to the discretion of the school and truancy officers, saying that they "may" issue citations. SB191 changes that language to "shall" issue citations. This law is harmful to homeschooling families who may find themselves targeted by aggressive school officials, and it is unnecessary as Utah law concerning truant students is satisfactory. ACTION REQUESTED Your help is needed today! Contact your senator (info here: http://www.utahsenate.org/aspx/roster.aspx ), asking them to vote "no" on SB191. Your message could read: "Please vote no on Senate Bill 191. Utah law on truancy is sufficient and homeschool students may find themselves unintentionally targeted by the bill." Read the text of the bill here: http://le.utah.gov/~2012/bills/sbillint/sb0191.pdf Without your support we could not stand for freedom in Utah! If you or someone you know is not a member of HSLDA, will you consider taking a moment today to join or recommend us and support our work defending individual families threatened by government officials and protecting homeschooling freedom for all?
