Rhode Island--Help Reverse Onerous New Demands in East Greenwich

The new policy is an immediate threat to your freedom to homeschool
your children.

Dear HSLDA members and friends in East Greenwich:

Without even talking to the families who would be affected, the East
Greenwich school committee rushed through a major homeschool policy
change while you were resting over Christmas and New Years! Now we
need your help to turn the tide.

Some of the unreasonable new demands are itemized below. Every
homeschool family will find its burden increased, and its privacy
invaded, if this policy is not immediately suspended and a task force
appointed to develop an alternative policy based on consensus.

Creating a major new policy with no notice to those affected, without
the consent of the governed, over the biggest holiday season of the
year--virtually in the dark of the night--should not be tolerated.

Please call every member of the East Greenwich school committee (phone
numbers below). Ask them to immediately suspend the new policy and
appoint a task force made up of homeschool parents and school
representatives to create a new consensus-based policy.

Send this email to other homeschool families you know in East
Greenwich. We need the help of every East Greenwich homeschool family!

Dr. Deidre Gifford, Chair
(401) 885-3016

Mr. Robert Durant, Vice-Chair
(401) 885-8450

Mr. David Green
(401) 885-0839

Mr. Jack Sommer
(401) 884-0474

Mrs. Mary Ellen Winters
(401) 885-1111

Mrs. Susan Records
(401) 885-4619

Mr. Paul Martin, (401) 884-1881

Here is a link to the new policy:

Below are some of the worst demands in the new policy and the
accompanying forms.

Quarterly progress reports are demanded
"Documentation" of progress is demanded
Work samples for each subject are demanded
Information is demanded on many subjects that are not required under
A "special" attendance register is demanded
It demands daily attendance records for each quarter
It demands records of hours attended daily
It demands that you state whether you met the required number of days
and hours
The "Home School Request" form demands a detailed description of the
curriculum to be used
It demands that you explain in detail your instructional strategies
It demands that you explain in detail your ability to effectively
instruct your children
It demands that you explain your reason for requesting homeschooling
Once the school committee appoints a task force with homeschool
parents on it, the task force can meet and work on developing a
consensus on what should be in the East Greenwich homeschool policy.

Thank you for standing with us for freedom in Rhode Island!

Sincerely Yours,

Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.
