Alabama -- Calls Needed to Stop
Expansion of State Control over Education

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Your calls and emails are needed to stop five bills that would change
the compulsory attendance law of Alabama. House Bill 141 would
increase the compulsory attendance age from 17 to 18 or graduation
from high school. However, students enrolled in church schools prior
to age 16 would continue to be permitted to withdraw at 16. House Bill
6, House Bill 42, Senate Bill 28, and Senate Bill 71 would all lower
the compulsory attendance age from 7 to 6 for all children, regardless
of their level of maturity or readiness to begin formal instruction.
As freedom-loving homeschoolers, we oppose any effort to expand the
state's control over education in any form.

Members of the House Education Committee and Senate Education
Committee need to know that parents, not the state, are best able to
determine when a child is ready for school and how long the child
should remain in school.

Action Requested:

1. Please call and/or email as many members of the House Education
Committee as possible with this message:

"Please vote against House Bill 141, which would increase Alabama's
compulsory school attendance age from 17 to 18. This bill restricts
the right of parents to choose when a child may pursue other
educational or work options. This bill will also waste taxpayer
dollars, because requiring the attendance of students who are
unwilling to remain in school beyond age 17 will have a disruptive
effect on other students' learning."

"Please vote against House Bill 6 and House Bill 42, both of which
would lower the compulsory attendance age from 7 to 6. Parents, not
state officials, are best able to determine when their child is ready
for formal education."

When contacting members of the committee, there is no need to identify
yourself as a homeschooler. This is broader than just a homeschooling
issue.

-> Can you look at the clouds and tell the direction of the wind?

An interesting phenomenon of wind is that it can blow in multiple
directions at the same time, at different heights from the ground.
But usually there is a prevailing wind. HSLDA watches the gusts
and monitors the prevailing trends of change in the legal climate
of home education. So no matter which way the wind is blowing,
we're there to protect your family.
