====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Victory for Freedom! SB 564 Passes 23-17 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Thank you for your phone calls! Today the Virginia Senate voted 23 to 17 in favor of limiting "curriculum description" to "a list of subjects to be studied"! Some formalities remain. The House must act on the Senate bill, and the Senate on the House bill. But since the bills are identical, there is no meaningful doubt that they are on their way to becoming law. Today's vote in the Senate was the last significant battle. If you are one of those families who was subjected to unreasonable curriculum description demands in the past, or even threatened with truancy, today is a day for a very personal and special level of rejoicing. As anticipated, the vote was close. If only four "ayes" had voted "nay," the bill would have failed. But Senator Dick Black, chief patron, was a highly effective advocate for this important improvement in the law. The bill received support from both parties. Democratic senators Ralph Northam and Jeff McWaters supported the bill in committee last week, and voted "aye" today as well. Republican senator Harry Blevins, who had voted against the bill in committee, cast an important "aye" vote in support today. The old law will remain in force until July 1 this summer. Families who start homeschooling before July will be subject to the old law for a short time. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely Yours, Scott A.
