====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Prosecutor Asks for Another Chance in Michigan Medical Decisions Case Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: You will recall that on December 21, 2011, the trial judge dismissed the medical neglect case against Ken and Erin Stieler. They had been charged because they refused to continue their son's chemotherapy after a PET scan indicated that he was cancer-free. On the very last day that such a request could be filed, the special prosecutor filed a motion for rehearing. She alleges two grounds--one technical and one substantive. If you want to read her pleading http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13628 and our response, http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13629 click on these terms. (Both documents require Adobe Acrobat Reader: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13630 ) While we feel confident about our ultimate position, it is pretty clear that the prosecutor intends to continue to fight to override the ability of parents to make medical decisions contrary to the views of doctors. This case may well shape parental rights principles for the long haul. We believe that parents, not doctors, should make tough decisions like this. Please continue to pray for the Stielers. We would appreciate your ongoing support as the expenses for this case continue. You can donate to the Home School Freedom Fund here: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13631 On the really good news front, Jacob Stieler had his third consecutive clear PET scan in January.
