====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Your Calls and Emails made a Difference--More Action Needed See Below! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Your calls and emails to the Education Committee and majority office made the difference--HB 1571 passed the Education Committee unanimously with only minor changes. It has been reported to HSLDA that Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt asked the majority caucus to pass the bill--thanks in large part, no doubt, to your efforts! The bill will go to the full House for consideration in the next few weeks and then will go to the Senate, where we will need to be prepared to act in support of HB 1571 and several other pieces of good legislation! Thank you for your response to advance homeschool freedom in New Hampshire. When HB 545 and HB 1571 pass the full legislature and are signed into law by the governor, New Hampshire homeschoolers will enjoy a less restrictive homeschool environment. We also wanted to make you aware of efforts that would support the traditional definition of marriage in New Hampshire. HSLDA's view is that marriage is an important civic institution based on traditional notions of Western civilization. These notions are worth defending because it is on these historical traditions that federal constitutional law recognizes the fundamental right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of children--a key foundation of the right to homeschool. The U.S. Supreme Court has written that parental rights are derived from "Western civilization concepts of the family as a union of a man and a woman with broad parental authority over minor children." See the U.S. Supreme Court case Troxel v. Granville, 530 U.S. 57 (2000). HB 437 would define marriage for the state of New Hampshire as being the union of a man and a woman. Representative David Bates, also the sponsor of HB 545 and a supporter of homeschool freedom in state, is the sponsor of HB 437 and will be leading an assembly in support of HB 437 at the State House in Concord on Tuesday February 7 starting at 11:45. All are encouraged to attend. You can read the text of HB 437 here: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13620 ACTION REQUESTED Please contact members of the House Education Committee to thank them for their unanimous approval of HB 1571.
