====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia--Update: Curriculum Description, Sports Bills Pass First Test Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Thank you for your calls in support of House Bill 1208! This morning a subcommittee of the House Education Committee voted strongly in favor of the bill, which clarifies that to provide a "description of the curriculum" means a simple list of subjects. Our thanks go to Delegate Brenda Pogge, the bill's sponsor, who testified powerfully in favor of the bill this morning. The only testimony against the bill came from a representative of the Virginia Education Association. He claimed that the bill "lowered the standards" for homeschooling. This is nonsense, of course. The curriculum description requirement is not a "standard" at all! Home instruction standards are implemented with the annual year-end assessment, which is not being changed. The only thing that will be reduced with HB 1208 is red tape and headaches for those families who live in school systems that have been making overbearing demands for curriculum information. Delegate Rob Bell's sports access bill (House Bill 947) sparked lively debate in the subcommittee. Because of all the handwringing about imaginary awful things that might happen if Virginia homeschoolers get the same sports access that families now enjoy in many other states, the bill was amended so its provisions automatically expire in 2017. This will give sports access a "trial run" to see if the hypothetical disadvantages actually occur. Now that both bills have passed their first legislative test, they will move on to the full House Education Committee next week. The Senate Education and Health Committee was not able to take action on the Senate version of the curriculum description bill (SB 564), sponsored by Senator Dick Black, before time ran out today. It will come back to the committee next week. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely Yours, Scott A.
