====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== South Dakota: Victory in House Committee! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Thank you for your phone calls! This morning the House Education Committee voted in favor of HB 1005--without making any of the harmful changes that were proposed in the Tieszen amendment. As promised, the Department of Education removed Section 2 of the bill, which was problematic. The remaining sections, 1 and 3, make some small but helpful clarifications. Also as promised, the department opposed the same aspects of the Tieszen amendment that homeschool advocates opposed. We expect that the bill in its current form will not be controversial. No further phone calls are therefore needed at this time. HSLDA will continue to monitor the bill to make sure harmful amendments are not inserted later. Matthew Irwin spoke at the hearing on behalf of the members of South Dakota Christian Home Educators. His testimony was pivotal in making sure the harmful Tieszen amendment was not added. The testimony of Bobbi J. Rank, general counsel for the Department of Education, was also very important. If you are not already a member of South Dakota Christian Home Educators, please consider joining to support their important mission for homeschool freedom in South Dakota. There is no fee for joining: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13524 Thank you for standing with us for liberty! Sincerely, Scott A.
