Nebraska: Truancy Difficulties--One Family's Ongoing Saga A judge's ruling reflected the confusing nature of state law when he recognized a homeschool family's exceptional academics but still found them guilty of truancy. Kansas: Truant Officer Sends 5-Page Questionnaire A local truant officer harried a member family with five pages of questions supposedly meant to determine whether they were legally homeschooling. HSLDA assured the official the family was complying with the law; that closed the matter. A Homeschool Study May Appear in your Mailbox The federal Department of Education is conducting a national survey that includes a homeschooling component. Though individuals are not obliged to respond, similar past surveys have provided useful information about the growth of homeschooling. California: Public School Officials Require Prior Approval to Homeschool A mistaken attempt by public school officials to issue homeschool "approval" illustrates the need for continued advocacy on behalf of parental liberty. Puerto Rico: Family Challenged HSLDA helped a Puerto Rico family after they were told they needed written permission to homeschool. In fact, homeschools in Puerto Rico are not subject to public school oversight. ParentalRights.Org Takes Action in State Legislatures They're working to secure the Parental Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution; they're also busy at work in various states. They're working alongside HSLDA to promote or oppose certain parental rights bills and to promote the amendment via resolution in several other states. New Military Fund The Home School Foundation is requesting donations to kick-start their new Military Fund. This fund helps military homeschool families purchase essential curriculum. Admissions Deadline at Patrick Henry College February 1 is PHC's regular admissions and scholarship deadline. All applications postmarked by this deadline will pay a lower application fee, and will be considered for more financial aid opportunities than students who wait. We anticipate very limited space on campus this year and encourage interested students to not wait until the last minute, as campus housing is filled on a first-come-first-served basis.
