====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia--Crucial Hearing on Sports Bill Thursday Morning Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, HSLDA is neutral on the bills now pending in the Virginia legislature that would give homeschoolers access to play on public school sports teams. But Delegate Rob Bell, primary sponsor of the bill getting the most attention, has asked us to pass this important message on to you: -------- Dear Friend: On Thursday at 7:30 a.m., the House Subcommittee on Students and Early Education will conduct a hearing on my House Bill 947. This is the bill that would enable homeschoolers to try out for sports at their local high school. As you know, in many jurisdictions the only opportunity for big team sports (like football) is through the local high school. This bill is gathering attention all around the country (read about it here http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13513 ). You can review the text here http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13514 . We need your help! The opponents include the Virginia Education Association and the Virginia Association of School Superintendents, and we expect them to show up in force. To help balance their arguments, we need as many homeschoolers to come as can. The subcommittee will be taking comment from the public, and even if you don't want to speak, you can raise your hand at the appropriate time to show your support. The subcommittee will meet in Room 5 East in the General Assembly Building. You can get directions to the Capitol and information on parking here http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13515 . If you haven't done so yet, you can also contact your legislator here http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=13516 . If the bill is defeated in subcommittee, then it will not become law this year. If we are successful, we will then move on to full committee. Now that we have Governor McDonnell's support, I believe this is our best chance ever to pass the measure and provide additional opportunities for homeschooled kids. Thank you for your interest in home schooling. Sincerely, Rob Bell, Delegate, 58th District ----- Sincerely yours, Scott A.
