Homeschoolers on Trial

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

Please keep the Thacker family in your thoughts and prayers as they
begin their trial today on charges of truancy under Nebraska's new
truancy laws. Our litigation team is in the Cornhusker State to
defend the family. See related story at:

When the family moved to Nebraska last year they discovered there was
no deadline to start an exempt school. So they determined to begin
their school year mid-fall. An anonymous report to authorities about
the children not being in school resulted in a visit from the truancy
officer. In the course of the investigation a sheriff's deputy
threatened to take the family's children if they did not enroll them
in public school immediately. The family contacted HSLDA, who informed
the official that the family was in compliance with the law and that
it was unnecessary and unconstitutional to threaten them because they
were homeschooling. Rather than dropping the case the county's overly
aggressive prosecuting attorney decided to take it to trial.

This can happen to anyone because there are those in authority who may
not understand the law, agree with our interpretation of it, or who
are hostile to homeschooling. This is why it is important we remain
vigilant and prepared to defend our freedoms.

Please keep the family and our litigation team in your thoughts and
prayers, and we will keep you informed.

Because of the support of our members, HSLDA has been able to stand
with individual families like the Thackers and the entire
homeschooling movement. We are committed to preserving your right to
homeschool. If you or someone you know is not a member of HSLDA, will
you consider taking a moment today to join or recommend us and support
our work defending individual families threatened by government
officials and protecting homeschooling freedom for all? Join now:

Very truly yours,
