Vermont Legislature Now in Session--Possible Threat Looming

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

The 2012 Vermont Legislative Session is now underway. Throughout the
session, which runs January 3 through May 4, we will be analyzing
bills that may affect your family and your right to homeschool.

Senate Bill 233 has been introduced, which would increase the maximum
age of compulsory school attendance from 16 to 18. This bill would
subject homeschool families to notification requirements to the
Department of Education for two more years. Although many continue to
homeschool after age 16, it is parents, not the government, who should
determine when children are ready to complete their formal secondary
education or begin the process of working or college. This is an
important freedom we must preserve. Please be prepared to take action
on this bill in the coming weeks if necessary.

We are pleased to work with Retta Dunlap, longtime legislative liaison
for the Vermont Home Education Network and ask that you stay tuned for
email action e-lerts and updates regarding Senate Bill 233 and other
legislation that may affect you.
