====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Pennsylvania - Battle to Preserve Traditional Marriage Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Traditional marriage is under attack in Pennsylvania. In the case of Cozen O'Connor v. Tobits, a case now pending in federal court in Philadelphia involving the rights of a lesbian couple, one of the parties is challenging the constitutionality of Pennsylvania's definition of marriage. Current state law defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman and does not recognize same-sex marriages entered into in other states or foreign countries. However, current law is based only on statutes passed by the Pennsylvania legislature. A constitutional amendment is needed to protect traditional marriage from the type of challenge seen in the court case. Parental rights, including the right to homeschool, rest on marriage as it has been known and honored for centuries. An attack on one-man, one-woman marriage is an attack on the foundation of parental rights and, thus, on your right to homeschool your children. That's why it is so important for you to contact state legislators and urge them to support House Bill 1434, legislation that would create a constitutional amendment defining marriage as "the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife." This bill is currently in the Committee on State Government where it has been since it was filed on May 3, 2011, six months ago. Members of the committee and other legislators need to know that the people of Pennsylvania want to protect traditional marriage with a constitutional amendment. Action Requested: 1. Please contact members of the Committee on State Government, your state representative, and your state senator with this message or something similar in your own words: "Please support House Bill 1434, which would create a constitutional amendment to define marriage as the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife. Only a constitutional amendment will protect traditional marriage from court challenges."
