Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Since homeschooling exploded in popularity in the early 1980s, homeschoolers have enjoyed the liberty to thrive in the United States due to the grace of God and the diligence and sacrifice of those first homeschool families. Throughout the years, HSLDA has kept constant vigilance fighting battle after battle to preserve our freedoms. Yet, as the federal government grows, and we see our rights become more and more threatened, we must defend our freedom even more fervently. Daniel Webster once said, "God grants liberty only to those who love it and are always ready to guard and defend it." In keeping with that statement, HSLDA created the Congressional Action Program (CAP). CAP teaches our members how to effectively interact with Congress and facilitates lobbying days for families to visit key members of Congress and encourage them to stand up for homeschool freedoms. We are hosting a CAP training day to inform our members regarding the battles we currently face in Washington, D.C. and equip them with the tools they will need to come along side us in protecting homeschooling nationwide. We will review legislation, practice lobbying techniques, and discuss ways you can make your voice heard. The CAP training and preparation day will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, VA. We will start at 10:00 a.m., take a break for lunch at noon, and then wrap up by 3:30 p.m. Our training day will prepare you for our upcoming CAP on the Hill lobbying days in Washington, D.C., as well as lobbying on your own. We will have congressional staff members, HSLDA's federal relations staff, and current CAP members share some of their lobbying experiences and tips for what works (and what does not). How do I sign up? 1. To participate in the CAP training day, each family must be members of HSLDA and complete the CAP Lobbyist Application http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12458 found at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12459 (unless you have already done so in the past). 2. COST: There is a fee of $15 per family to help subsidize lunch expenses. However, if you have paid to attend any of the previous CAP training days, the fee is waived. 3. TRAVEL: We do not provide overnight accommodations, but as an HSLDA member, you can take advantage of a 20 percent discount with Choice Hotels http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12460 found at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12461.
