====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Alabama -- Mobile Daytime Curfew to be Reintroduced Tomorrow Dear HSLDA Members and Friends in Mobile: We have been informed that Councilmember Fred Richardson Jr. intends to reintroduce the original version of Mayor Sam Jones' proposed curfew ordinance at the Mobile City Council's regular meeting tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. As you may remember, an amended version of this curfew ordinance was defeated http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12435 approximately two weeks ago on September 13, 2011. Because the amended version of the proposed ordinance was defeated at that time, the Mobile City Council never voted on the original version of the proposed ordinance. For that reason, Councilmember Richardson intends to reintroduce the original version of the proposed ordinance for a vote on its own merits. Unfortunately, the original version of the ordinance is significantly worse than the amended version of the ordinance which was just defeated two weeks ago. Some our concerns with the original version of the ordinance have already been detailed in our 7/26/2011 e-lert entitled "Alabama - Mobile Daytime Curfew Meeting Tonight." http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12436 Among other things, the original version of the proposed ordinance subjects some minors to the daytime curfew who are not even required to be in school under Alabama's compulsory attendance law. (Please see our 8/4/2011 e-lert entitled "Alabama - Proposed Mobile Daytime Curfew Changed" http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12437 for more information on some of the differences between the original and amended versions of the proposed curfew ordinance.) While we have already defeated one daytime curfew proposal in Mobile, it is important that you contact your city council members to let them know that you also oppose the original version of the proposed daytime curfew ordinance, if you have not already done so. Action Requested: 1. Please contact the mayor and members of the Mobile City Council and express your opposition to the proposed ordinance. The names and contact information for the city council members http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12438 are available online. The mayor's contact information http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12439 can also be found online. 2. Attend the meeting of the city council tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at the Government Plaza Auditorium at 205 Government Street to demonstrate your opposition to the proposed ordinance. 3. Forward this email to other homeschooling families who are not members of HSLDA and ask them to take the same action. See the text of the original proposed ordinance >> http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12440 Read HSLDA's information on daytime curfews >> http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=12441 Very truly yours, Darren Jones HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How long are you in for? Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA. It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of homeschooling ahead.
